Single-Phase Induction Energy Meter: Its Four Systems
C — Damping System. In the conventional single-phase induction energy meter, the four named systems are driving, moving, braking and registering. A separate damping system is not included in this classification.
Driving and moving systems
The driving system uses magnetic fields associated with the voltage and current circuits to induce currents in an aluminium disc. Their interaction produces driving torque that, under the intended operating conditions, is proportional to active power VIcosφ.
The moving system consists principally of the aluminium disc mounted on a spindle with its supporting arrangement. The disc rotates as the meter measures energy consumption.
Braking and registering systems
A permanent magnet provides the braking system. As the disc moves through its field, eddy currents develop and produce a torque opposing rotation. With the magnet’s flux fixed, this braking torque is approximately proportional to disc speed.
At steady speed, driving and braking torques balance. Disc speed therefore tracks active power, while the registering mechanism counts accumulated revolutions to indicate electrical energy, usually in kWh.
Why “damping” is the distractor
In a pointer-type indicating instrument, damping helps a pointer settle after it moves. An induction energy meter’s disc is intended to rotate continuously while power is consumed; braking establishes the appropriate running speed. Although braking is physically a retarding effect, the conventional named subsystem is the braking system, not a separate damping system.
The options clearly refer to the induction-disc meter. Electronic meters use a different internal measurement arrangement.

Why the Other Options Are Not the Answer
- A — Braking System: present; a permanent magnet provides speed-dependent opposing torque.
- B — Driving System: present; produces the torque associated with the power being measured.
- D — Moving System: present; includes the rotating disc and spindle.
Remember for the Exam
Disc speed indicates the rate of energy use (power); the accumulated revolution count indicates energy.
Common mistake: Do not equate energy with power or assume that braking means the disc must stop while the load is consuming power.
