The prospective fault current is the current the network would supply into the fault before protective devices limit or interrupt it. It is determined by the prefault system voltage and the equivalent Thevenin impedance seen from the fault point.

Fault current = available voltage ÷ source impedance.
Fault current = available voltage ÷ source impedance.
